These desks were made for an interactive design company based in Lewis Wharf in Boston. I wanted to bring elements of the huge wood beams and exposed utilities in the space. A great family-owned local lumberyard (Farnworth’s in Shirley) had a huge 10′ slab of maple. The tree from Lancaster, MA was originally over three feet in diameter but unfortunately needed to be felled because of its age. Evidence of the tree’s impending demise can be found in the extensive spalting. The desks were finished with five coats of tung oil to bring out the detailed grain and coloration.
